If you have ever experienced a sudden loss of hearing, then you know how terrifying this condition can be. Popping up out of nowhere, hearing loss that happens quickly can cause extreme anxiety and stress – especially if you don’t know how it happened.
Sudden hearing loss (SHL) is a condition in which a person experiences a rapid onset of hearing loss, typically occurring within 72 hours. A visit to the doctor might give you an initial diagnosis of impacted wax or possibly even an ear infection – and unfortunately, the clock could be ticking away to determine the actual cause of sudden hearing loss that has nothing to do with wax or a virus.
Unfortunately, the exact cause of sudden hearing loss is often unknown, but there are several factors that may contribute to the development of this condition. While it often can’t be completely narrowed down, there are some factors that may contribute to an immediate loss of hearing.
Some possible causes of sudden hearing loss include:
- Viral infections: Certain viral infections, such as influenza or herpes, can cause inflammation in the inner ear, which can lead to sudden hearing loss.
- Vascular conditions: Conditions that affect blood flow to the inner ear, such as high blood pressure or blood clots, can cause sudden hearing loss.
- Ototoxic medications: Certain medications, such as some antibiotics and chemotherapy drugs, can cause damage to the inner ear and lead to sudden hearing loss.
- Trauma: Head injuries or exposure to sudden, loud noises can cause damage to the inner ear and lead to sudden hearing loss.
- Autoimmune disorders: In some cases, autoimmune disorders that cause inflammation in the body can also affect the inner ear and lead to sudden hearing loss.
Regardless of the cause, the immediate loss of hearing is nothing short of frightening – and unless it is treated quickly and correctly, the hearing loss could be a permanent issue.
It’s important to seek immediate medical attention if you experience sudden hearing loss, as early treatment can help to improve outcomes. Treatment may include medications such as steroids, antiviral drugs, or antibiotics, as well as other interventions such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy or cochlear implants, depending on the underlying cause and severity of the hearing loss.
While you will often know if you are experiencing sudden hearing loss, you can also begin to slowly lose the ability to hear over time (due to aging, chronic exposure to loud noises, infections, and even due to reactions from medications).
