The constant ringing, hissing, or buzzing of tinnitus can be a nightmare. Whether it comes and goes or is a steady grinding presence, it’s never welcome and can be a heavy burden to bear.
Over 50 million Americans suffer from tinnitus symptoms, an outwardly indiscernible ringing, hissing, buzzing, roaring, or clicking noise in the ear. The level of discomfort tinnitus can generate for its sufferers ranges from mild to debilitating.
Because no one can hear the sounds generated by tinnitus but the person experiencing them, some medical professionals don’t take it seriously. Some tinnitus sufferers can become discouraged with the general advice to “just learn to live with it” some tinnitus sufferers can become depressed.
At El Dorado Hearing, we understand the debilitating effects tinnitus symptoms can have on a person’s quality of life. We offer a wide variety of tinnitus treatment options, and we are dedicated to finding the right solutions to ease your tinnitus.
Tinnitus Sound Therapy
Tinnitus sound therapy uses a process known as habituation to retrain the way the brain interprets tinnitus. Essentially, the brain learns to reclassify the unwanted sound as something neutral or unimportant.
Sound therapy helps a person “forget” about the sound. That might sound tricky, but your brain already does it all the time.
After a time, tinnitus becomes associated with this sound.
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy
Tinnitus retraining therapy is a treatment option that attempts to retrain the way your brain, central nervous system, and auditory system receive, process, and interprets sound.
TRT attempts to comprehensively address why you hear certain sounds and seeks to recalibrate your internal systems to prevent the creation of similar sounds in the future.
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy uses sound therapy and directive counseling over 12-24 months to properly deal with the three systems involved: the auditory system (hearing), the limbic system (emotions), and the autonomic nervous system (flight or fight response).
Neuromonics
Neuromonics are a pattern of acoustic stimuli designed to retrain the neural pathways.
Customized for your hearing and tinnitus, they are delivered in two stages via a small medical device (Neuromonics processor) resembling an MP3 player and sent to your ears via comfortable, high-quality earphones.
Our tinnitus treatment program includes ongoing personalized support, education, and monitoring from an audiologist specializing in tinnitus. Neuromonics also involves personalization for each individual’s hearing profile, stimulation of a broad range of frequencies, and intermittent exposure to the tinnitus signal.
This treatment aims to positively engage the limbic system (brain structures involved in emotion, learning, and memory), promoting relaxation and ongoing, efficient desensitization to your tinnitus.
Sound Generators
Sound Generators are auditory devices with white noise to block out tinnitus ringing sounds. There are two types of sound generators: tabletop and wearable.
Tabletop sound generators are placed by the bedside to ease ringing sounds experienced while sleeping. They usually emit natural sounds like rainfall, wind, birds, or a heartbeat to distract users from the constant ringing.
They can also produce white noise – a very low-level constant rushing sound similar to radio static.
Most of these sound generators are battery-powered and fully portable, or they plug into an outlet. While less portable, an AC-powered sound generator is always ready for use. The volume is easy to adjust, including a timer to turn off the low-level sound once the user has fallen asleep. The device can also be left on all night to distract users from tinnitus ringing first thing in the morning.
Wearable sound generators are even smaller than their table-top counterparts and can either be placed in the ear canal or behind the ear – much like a hearing aid. They’re battery-powered and generate white noise to block out tinnitus ringing sounds.
Daily Wear Hearing Aids
Daily wear hearing aids are designed to be inserted and removed every day. They come in two styles: behind the ear and in the ear. Both types are available from a multitude of manufacturers.
Daily wear hearing aids require battery changing every 3-10 days or recharging each night, plus occasional cleaning and maintenance. Daily wear hearing aids are the most common and readily available type of hearing aid device.
Extended Wear Hearing Aids
An extended wear hearing aid is a device inserted into your ear canal by a specially trained Hearing Clinician, remaining in position 24/ 7 for up to three months at a time.
Once in the ear, an extended wear hearing aid doesn’t require battery changing or cleaning. A hearing professional with specialized training is the only one suited to fit and install extended wear hearing aids. A significant advantage of extended wear hearing aids is protection against tinnitus at night – the time of day most people are troubled by the affliction.

Medication
Presently, no FDA-approved drugs specifically for tinnitus and no medications reversing the neural hyperactivity at the root of tinnitus. Drugs cannot cure tinnitus, but they may provide relief from some severe tinnitus symptoms.
The medications most often used in tinnitus management are psychoactive drugs that treat the behavioral issues related to tinnitus. These drugs can help relieve the stress, anxiety, and depression related to tinnitus, minimizing the psychological burden of the condition.
An array of drugs have been anecdotally used off-label for tinnitus relief. Some of these include antihistamines, anticonvulsants, anesthetics, and even anti-alcohol drugs.
Relaxation Techniques
Several relaxation techniques are helping people with tinnitus deal with their symptoms. The effectiveness and reliability of these techniques vary from person to person.
We’ve combined what we believe to be the best techniques available to help you. Stop by our E. Pima Street or N. Oracle Road location today to receive a consultation about how we can help you on your journey to healthy hearing.
